WFPC2 Imaging of Quasar Environments: A Comparison of LBQS and HST Archive Quasars

چکیده
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) data on the large-scale environments of 16 0.39 < z < 0.51 quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS). The LBQS quasars are representative of the radio-quiet population, and this is the first look at their large-scale environments. We compare the LBQS environments with the environments of 27 0.15 < z < 0.55 quasars selected from the HST Archive. The majority of the Archive quasars are from the PG and PKS surveys, and these quasars are more luminous on average than the LBQS. By comparing the LBQS and Archive environments, we investigate whether previous quasar environment studies have been biased due to studying unusually radio or optically luminous quasars. We compare observed galaxy number counts with expected counts predicted from the CNOC2 field-galaxy luminosity function in order to look for statistical excesses of galaxies around the quasars. We detect a significant excess around the Archive quasars but find no such excess around the LBQS quasars. We calculate the amplitude of the spatial correlation function and find that the LBQS environments are consistent with that of the typical galaxy while the Archive environments are slightly Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by AURA, Inc.

LBQS 0103 − 2753 : A 0 . 3 Arcsec Binary Quasar
Imaging and spectroscopy with HST show that LBQS 0103−2753 (V = 17.8, z = 0.848) is a binary quasar with a separation of 0 .3 or 2.3 kpc. This is by far the smallest separation binary quasar reported to date. The two components have very different spectra, including the presence of strong broad absorption lines (BALs) in component A only. The emission-line redshifts, based on the broad high ion...
متن کاملMass Functions of the Active Black Holes in Distant Quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey, the Bright Quasar Survey, and the Color-selected Sample of the Sdss Fall Equatorial Stripe
We present mass functions of distant actively accreting supermassive black holes residing in luminous quasars discovered in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS), the Bright Quasar Survey (BQS), and the Fall Equatorial Stripe of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The quasars cover a wide range of redshifts from the local universe to z = 5 and were subject to different selection criteria and f...
متن کاملThe Apparently Normal Galaxy Hosts for Two Luminous Quasars
HST images (with WFPC2) of PHL 909 (z = 0.171) and PG 0052+251 (z = 0.155) show that these luminous radio-quiet quasars each occur in an apparently normal host galaxy. The host galaxy of PHL 909 is an elliptical galaxy (∼ E4) and the host of PG 0052+251 is a spiral (∼ Sb). Both host galaxies are several tenths of a magnitude brighter than L, the characteristic Schechter luminosity of field gala...
متن کاملLBQS 1429-0053: a binary quasar rather than a lensed quasar
Very deep ESO/VLT FORS1 and ISAAC images, as well as HST NICMOS2 data are used to infer the nature of the quasar pair LBQS 1429-0053 A and B, either a binary quasar or a doubly-imaged lensed quasar. Direct search of a putative lensing galaxy is unsuccessful down to R=27, J=24, Ks=22.5 and H=22.5. Moreover, no galaxy overdensity close to the quasar pair is found. A weak shear analysis of the FOR...
متن کاملEstimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks
A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...
